RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
