Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
