Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
